Chiropractic Care and Asthma

Chiropractic care
According to Reuters Health Information’s article published in the Journal of the AMA, many children who suffer from asthma are using “complimentary medicine” for their problem. Most commonly, these include herbal medications, chiropractic, homeopathy, and Vitamin C supplements. Dr. Sheldon Spier, from the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary, found that 30% of the 117 surveyed pediatric asthma patients used some form of complementary medicine. The most common reason these alternative treatments were used was because the non-medical practitioners were perceived to be “treating the whole patient”.

Several studies were listed by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association for showing the benefits of chiropractic care for children suffering from asthma. Some excerpts are as follows:

  • 76.5% of children with asthma claimed they benefited from chiropractic care.
  • Quality of life impairment scores were significantly lower for 90.1% of children after 60 days of chiropractic care.
  • After 60 days of care, asthma attacks on average decreased by 44.9% and medication use for asthma decreased by 66.5%.
  • 92% of parents with asthmatic children who received chiropractic said this treatment was beneficial.
